Smart heat pump control: how data creates energy savings

Heating and hot water account for more than half of the energy consumption in European buildings. To reduce costs and emissions, it is not enough to have an efficient heat pump – the key is smart driving.

What does model predictive control (MPC) bring?

A recent study from the project RES4BUILD (a research and innovation project funded by the EU under the Horizon 2020 programme) showed that model predictive control (MPC) can optimize the operation of the heat pump so that it consumes less electricity while maintaining thermal comfort.

The tested system combined solar panels, ground heat exchanger a air sources. The MPC control system used the weather forecast and the current heat demand in the building, and decided where to draw heat most efficiently.

Test results

Main benefits:

  • Lower electricity consumption without loss of comfort,
  • Efficient use of renewable energy sources,
  • Stable and reliable operation even in changing conditions.

MPC technology thus confirms that the future of heating belongs to intelligent systems, that can anticipate and adapt to the current needs of a household or business.
